FORMATION
The Merbein District Historical Society Inc was formed in 1997, with much local enthusiasm and support from the Mildura & District Historical Society. The Society's charter is to:
'Collect, Preserve & Promote the History of Merbein and District'
INTERIM COMMITTEE: Max Whiting, Bob McCarthy, Leon Wagner, Jenny Bennett, Freda Antcliff, Harold Brinsden, Mary Dorman, Sue Nichols and Bill Bennett. The inaugural president of the Society was Leon Wagner, with Bill Bennett (Treasurer), and Jenny Bennett (Secretary). We now have 46 members, with 20 - 25 attending each monthly meeting.
FIRST MEETING
The guest speaker was Freda Antcliff (nee Lowe) who spent her early life in Merbein and knew much of its history. It was indicated by the President of the Mildura & District Historical Society, who was also present, that 'Merbein had an enormous wealth of history to be explored'.
FIRST PUBLICATION
In September, 2000, the first Quarterly edition of the 'Merbein Historian' , edited by Bronwyn Zrna, was published. The Society has also produced over 18 publications on various aspects of Merbein's history and members have been involved in at least 7 other historical productions, including DVDs.
FIRST HOME
The Society first met in the Merebin Centre in O'Bryan Street before re-locating across the road to the former Baby Health Centre building, where we stayed until 2021. In March 2021, we re-located to 36 Box Street. Our entrance is from the Main Avenue door, adjacent to the Merbein Library.
